Tatum Johnson, a fourth-grader at Hill Elementary School in Lincoln, was one of five Girls on the Run participants to win $500 for an essay on “How Girls on the Run Makes You Fearless.”
Nearly 100,000 girls participated in Girls on the Run programs across the United States and Canada last year. Johnson, who completed two seasons of Girls on the Run last school year, submitted the essay several months ago as a third-grader.
She learned she was a winner during an all-school assembly Aug. 26 at Hill. Her GOTR coaches — Cindy Benda, Megan Ehlers, Lara Schwartz and Tracey Swan — attended to congratulate her on the achievement. And a brand-new Girls on the Run “Ghoul on the Run 5K” monster mascot presented Johnson with a “monster” check for $500. The nationwide contest was sponsored by Secret®.
“Soon the sound of hundreds of giggling and cheering girls will ring out over Lincoln.
No, it’s not a birthday party or a Justin Bieber concert.
It’s the Girls on the Run (GOTR) season-ending 5K run at Holmes Lake on May 14.
Helping cheer these girls on will be the more than 200 women volunteer coaches who are the heart and soul of GOTR of Nebraska.”
Sonali Rajan, a Girls on the Run coach for Girls on the Run of Manhattan, was featured along with her team of GOTR girls on the NBC Nightly News series “Making a Difference”! The segment aired on Tuesday, June 28 at 6:30 pm. Click here to see view the piece or visit www.nightly.msnbc.com!
